Introduction
Before we notice a face, we often notice what someone is doing with their hands.
They create, repair, comfort, build, teach, guide, celebrate, and remember. They bear the marks of time, experience, and countless ordinary moments that quietly shape a life. Every line, scar, wrinkle, and gesture hints at a story that words alone cannot fully tell.
Hands is an ongoing photographic exploration of those stories. Rather than focusing on identity through a face, this project invites viewers to discover the character, craftsmanship, and humanity expressed through one of our most remarkable and expressive features.
Project Statment
This photography project emerged unexpectedly from a recent portfolio critique by one of my photography mentors. After several uncomfortable moments filled with pointed feedback and constructive criticism, she finally remarked, “I’m not overly blown away by your images—but I really like the way you pose hands. Perhaps you should explore that further.”
Her words initially stung, yet they quickly opened a doorway toward something deeper. Over the years, this mentor had repeatedly emphasized how hands are notoriously difficult to pose effectively, explaining that they often betray nervousness, tension, or artificiality in otherwise strong portraits.
Her unexpected praise of my handling of hands felt both surprising and affirming. In that moment, her observation struck a chord and resonated deeply with me, providing clarity for my next photography project and creative endeavor.
What exactly was drawing me to this subject? I spent time meditating on the underlying reasons. As I listened inwardly, a familiar phrase surfaced clearly in my mind: “Eyes are the windows into the soul.” If this well-known proverb holds true, then perhaps our hands serve as the instruments through which the soul engages with our physical world. Through touch, gesture, creation, and connection, hands become a profound expression of our innermost selves, conveying love, compassion, creativity, strength, vulnerability, and intention.
With this insight, my project evolved into a thoughtful exploration of human expression and emotional resonance. My goal became capturing the beauty, complexity, and authentic humanity conveyed by hands, to reveal deeper truths about who we are, how we feel, and the ways we silently communicate.
“Every pair of hands carries a history. Photography simply gives us a reason to pause long enough to read it.”
