Parts and Pieces

A study of how the individual elements of the world reveal the character of the whole

Introduction

We naturally experience the world as complete objects, such as a boat, a building, a machine, or a tree. Our minds quickly assemble the individual pieces into a single, familiar image.

This project asks a different question.

What happens when we slow down and look at the parts before the whole?

Parts & Pieces is an ongoing exploration of the idea that we can understand the whole by careful observation of the individual parts.

Project Statment

One of the unexpected lessons photography has taught me is that seeing and understanding are not always the same thing.

It’s easy to recognize an object without truly noticing it. We identify it, assign it a name, and move on. But when we pause long enough to study its individual parts, something changes. Texture, wear, repetition, craftsmanship, and design begin to tell a richer story than the object alone ever could.

This project grew from that realization. Rather than photographing subjects simply as complete objects, I began exploring the smaller elements that define their character. Each photograph isolates a fragment of a much larger story, inviting the viewer to consider how those individual pieces contribute to our understanding of the whole.

My hope is that these images encourage a different way of seeing, not just in photographs, but in everyday life. The more carefully we observe the individual parts, the more completely we begin to understand the whole.
